Practical application of FF50 firefighting drones in wildfire rescue operations in Dali Prefecture, Yunnan Province

**Background**

In the spring of 2023, a wildfire broke out in the Cangshan Mountain Scenic Area of Dali Prefecture, Yunnan, due to extreme drought. The fire zone featured steep terrain (average slope exceeding 60°), making it inaccessible to traditional firefighting vehicles, while thick smoke severely limited helicopter visibility. The Dali Prefecture Emergency Management Bureau deployed the FF50 firefighting drone, leveraging its high payload capacity, centimeter-level positioning, and long endurance to successfully execute an innovative "aerial fire station" rescue operation.

**Operational Workflow**

1. **3D Fire Scene Mapping (Fully Autonomous Mode)**

- Equipped with an 18-megapixel 4K gimbal camera (A8mini), the drone flew along pre-set routes at a cruising speed of 10m/s, completing a 20km² fire zone scan within 20 minutes.

- Utilizing RTK centimeter-level positioning and BeiDou/GPS dual-mode navigation, it generated thermal maps and 3D models of the fire, accurately marking the fire spread direction and critical protection zones (e.g., ancient tree clusters).

2. **Precision Delivery of Fire Retardant (Semi-Automatic Mode)**

- Operating at its maximum payload capacity of 100KG, the drone carried four gel-based fire retardant canisters (25KG each).

- Using the "fixed-point drop" function, it hovered 30 meters above the fire line in a fully deployed state (422×422×118cm) and released the retardant in batches via a pneumatic triggering mechanism, achieving an accuracy of ±1.5m.

3. **Emergency Supply Transport (Manual Mode)**

- The drone airdropped respirators, first-aid kits, and other supplies to trapped firefighters. Thanks to its 302cm motor wheelbase and wind resistance (stable flight in 7-level winds), it performed five precise hover-and-drop maneuvers in turbulent valley conditions.

4. **Night Monitoring (Black Box Integration)**

- The drone transmitted real-time infrared footage via a 30km upgraded remote control link while the black box recorded wind speed, battery status, and other critical data. Upon detecting reignition points, it automatically initiated a "low-battery return—battery swap—return to fire zone" cycle.

**Technical Highlights**

- **Rapid Response**: Deployment to takeoff took only 3 minutes (folded dimensions: 170×146×118cm), 40% faster than helicopters.

- **Safety Redundancy**: Eight motors (10,452W each) ensured stable hovering even during single-motor failure, while the aviation-grade aluminum monocoque body withstood high-temperature radiation.

- **Intelligent Decision-Making**: The flight control system analyzed historical black box data to optimize firefighting routes for subsequent missions, improving endurance efficiency by 15%.

**Rescue Outcomes**

- Completed 42 sorties, delivering 2.1 tons of fire retardant and creating 3.7km of firebreaks.

- Achieved zero casualties and safeguarded UNESCO World Heritage sites, including the Three Pagodas of Chongsheng Temple.

This case validated the FF50's reliability in extreme environments, establishing its integrated "reconnaissance-extinguishing-supply" capability as a new paradigm for smart firefighting in high-altitude forested regions.
