On July 19, 2025, the hydropower project on the lower reaches of the Yarlung Tsangpo River (Motuo Hydropower Station), located in Motuo County, Nyingchi City, Tibet, grandly commenced construction.
The project is led by China Yajiang Group Co., Ltd., with a total investment estimated at 1.2 trillion yuan. The plan involves building five cascade power stations with a staggering total installed capacity of 60 million kilowatts, which will be three times the size of the Three Gorges Dam. The Motuo Hydropower Station adopts an innovative development model, including river straightening and
tunnel diversion, aiming to fully utilize the local natural drop and hydropower resources. Upon completion, it is expected to become the world's largest hydropower project.
However, the terrain in Motuo County is treacherous, and transportation conditions are extremely poor. Traditional road transport methods are inadequate here. The Zhamo and Paime highways are in very poor condition, only passable by small vehicles, far from meeting the transportation needs for tens of thousands of tons of materials. Furthermore, frequent natural disasters such as mudslides and avalanches often block traffic. Simultaneously, complex air currents in the canyon make it difficult for helicopters to take off and land, while the shallow waters of the Yarlung Tsangpo River hinder boat passage. Therefore, traditional air and water transport methods are almost unusable here.
